Program Notes:

Camp Fire is about the town of Paradise, California which suffered a tremendous wildfire during November 2018 (nicknamed the “Camp Fire” after Camp Creek Road, its place of origin). The Camp Fire was the most deadly and destructive in California’s history, causing 86 fatalities and destroying 18,804 buildings. The music, video, and fixed media are organized into three ideas: flight, destruction, and aftermath.

The Camp Fire bloated national news coverage when it reached its height in early November but quickly died away after it was contained. In my research, I was struck to see people’s fear in fleeing from the fire, the enormous damage that residents were left with, and the emotions tied up in losing all possessions and a home. This project has focused my attention to sensationalist media which follows natural disasters in their peak but reveals shallow follow up coverage when people need it the most as they are trying to rebuild their communities. I hope this piece helps keep the Camp Fire at the front of our minds so that we may not forget its destruction, fatalities, and its survivors.
